Putin meets US envoys for Ukraine war talks

## High-Level Discussions in Moscow

Russian President Vladimir Putin met with US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff in Moscow to discuss a peace plan aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This meeting marks a significant diplomatic effort by the US, spearheaded by President Donald Trump, to resolve the war that has persisted for over four years.

## Temporary Ceasefire Agreement

During the talks, both Russia and Ukraine agreed to a temporary ceasefire, pledging not to target each other's capitals for three days. This pause in hostilities is intended to facilitate the negotiations and is seen as a crucial step towards potential peace.

## Escalating Conflict and Civilian Impact

The war, initiated by Russia in 2022, has resulted in significant civilian casualties and displacement. Recent Russian attacks have intensified, with strikes in Kyiv and surrounding areas causing multiple deaths. Despite the ongoing violence, the temporary ceasefire offers a glimmer of hope for de-escalation.

## Envoys' Upcoming Visit to Kyiv

Kushner and Witkoff are expected to visit Kyiv following their discussions in Moscow. This visit is notable as it will be their first since Trump resumed office, and it underscores the US's commitment to finding a resolution. The envoys aim to assess the possibility of progress towards peace during their stay.

## Broader Diplomatic Context

The peace talks occur amidst a backdrop of heightened tensions and increased military actions from both sides. The US's involvement in other international conflicts, such as with Iran, has also complicated peace efforts. However, the current diplomatic push reflects a renewed focus on resolving the Ukraine conflict.
