## Refugee Found Dead After Release
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind refugee from Myanmar, was found dead in Buffalo, New York, five days after being dropped off by Border Patrol agents at a local doughnut shop. The 56-year-old had been released from a county jail on February 19, 2026, but was not eligible for deportation. His family was unaware of his release and expected him to walk out of jail.
## Circumstances of His Death
Shah Alam's body was discovered near a downtown sports arena. The cause of death is under investigation, with conflicting reports about whether it was health-related or due to exposure. The Buffalo Police Department initially ruled out exposure or homicide, but the Erie County Department of Health has not confirmed this.
## Criticism of Border Patrol Actions
Buffalo's mayor criticized federal agents for leaving Shah Alam, who was nearly blind and did not speak English, alone in freezing temperatures. The mayor described the decision as unprofessional and inhumane. U.S. Customs and Border Protection stated that Shah Alam accepted a ride to a coffee shop, which they deemed a safe location.
## Background and Legal Issues
Shah Alam arrived in the U.S. in December 2024 with his family. He had been arrested a year prior for an incident involving police officers, which his lawyer attributed to cultural misunderstandings. He pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges and was awaiting sentencing.
## Calls for Accountability
The incident has prompted calls for a thorough investigation into the actions of the Border Patrol agents involved. U.S. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand has requested a detailed report on the matter.
