Abu Dhabi tests driverless trucks in first regional pilot

## Autonomous Trucks Tested in KEZAD

Abu Dhabi has initiated the first regional trial of autonomous freight trucks, operating within the Khalifa Economic Zones Abu Dhabi (KEZAD). This pilot project, overseen by the Integrated Transport Centre in collaboration with Autotech and AD Ports Group, aims to evaluate the performance of driverless vehicles in a controlled industrial setting.

## Enhancing Smart Mobility

The trial is part of Abu Dhabi's broader strategy to advance smart mobility. Throughout 2025, developers worked to adapt the trucks' artificial intelligence systems to local conditions, ensuring they meet safety and operational standards. The initiative is expected to provide valuable data for future transport regulations and assess the readiness of the technology for commercial use.

## Future Implications

Officials believe that autonomous freight vehicles could significantly improve delivery efficiency, reduce costs, and bolster supply chains within industrial zones. The project aligns with the UAE National Strategy for Artificial Intelligence 2031, which seeks to position the country as a leader in AI and advanced technologies. Dr. Abdulla Hamad AlGhfeli of Abu Dhabi Mobility emphasized the importance of this pilot in expanding the use of autonomous systems beyond passenger transport.
