Dangerous gamble: Iran’s evolving missiles get closer to US warships. What changed?

## Rising Tensions in the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has recently intensified its missile attacks on US naval vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime passage. Over the past week, Iranian forces have launched missiles at American warships, including an aircraft carrier, raising concerns about Tehran's improved targeting capabilities.

## Enhanced Missile Technology

The recent attacks involved medium-range ballistic missiles with maneuverable warheads, which can adjust their trajectory mid-flight to hit moving targets. This development suggests that Iran's missile technology has advanced, potentially increasing the threat to US naval operations in the region.

## Strategic Risks and Responses

Iran's aggressive strategy is partly driven by economic pressures, including a US-enforced blockade that limits its oil exports. Tehran aims to make the blockade costly and dangerous for the US, hoping to shift Washington's strategic calculations. However, any successful strike on a US vessel could provoke a significant military response, escalating the conflict further.

## The Role of External Assistance

There are concerns that Iran might be receiving targeting support from countries like Russia or China, although no concrete evidence has been presented. Such assistance could enhance Iran's ability to threaten US naval forces, complicating the strategic landscape.

## The Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

Despite the risks, Iran continues to leverage its geographical advantage in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital energy corridor. While the US can take measures to protect its vessels, completely neutralizing Iran's threat in the region remains challenging. Tehran's strategy does not require defeating the US Navy outright but aims to increase the political and operational costs for the US.
