## Flu Season Precautions
As the flu season begins in the UAE, health authorities are emphasizing the importance of vaccination and preventive measures to safeguard families. The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has initiated the National Seasonal Influenza Awareness Campaign for 2026–2027, running from September 1 to March 31, 2027. The campaign's goal is to boost vaccination rates and educate the public on flu prevention, especially for those at higher risk of complications.
## Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Flu vaccines are available for everyone in the UAE starting from six months old. Priority is given to older adults, pregnant women, children, healthcare workers, and individuals with chronic illnesses or weakened immune systems. Annual vaccination is crucial as flu viruses evolve, and immunity from previous vaccines can diminish over time.
## Preventive Measures
In addition to vaccination, families can take several steps to reduce flu risk. Regular handwashing with soap and water, especially after coughing or sneezing, is essential. Covering the mouth and nose with a tissue or elbow when sneezing, avoiding touching the face with unclean hands, and ensuring good ventilation indoors can help prevent the spread of the virus. Children with flu symptoms should stay home from school, and adults should avoid close contact with others if they are ill.
## When to Seek Medical Advice
Most people with mild flu symptoms need rest, fluids, and time to recover while monitoring their condition. However, those at higher risk or experiencing severe symptoms should seek medical advice promptly. Antiviral medications may be prescribed for high-risk patients and are most effective when started early. It's important to note that antibiotics are ineffective against the flu, as it is caused by a virus.
