The UAE has broadened its annual flu campaign to encompass seasonal respiratory diseases, urging pregnant women and older adults to get vaccinated against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). This expansion was announced during the launch of the Ministry of Health and Prevention's national campaign for the 2026–2027 season.

## Target Groups

The campaign specifically targets two high-risk groups: pregnant women and older adults. Health officials emphasize the importance of vaccination for these groups to prevent severe respiratory illnesses and reduce hospitalizations. The World Health Organization recommends maternal vaccination from the 28th week of pregnancy, while older adults, particularly those aged 75 and above, are also encouraged to receive the vaccine.

## Understanding RSV

RSV is a common virus affecting the lungs and airways, often causing mild symptoms similar to a cold. However, it can lead to more serious conditions like pneumonia and bronchiolitis, especially in infants and the elderly. It is a leading cause of hospitalizations among infants globally.

## Comprehensive Health Approach

Dr. Hussein Abdulrahman Al Rand highlighted the campaign's shift towards a more comprehensive approach to respiratory disease prevention. This includes promoting healthy behaviors and ensuring access to accurate health information. The initiative aligns with the World Health Organization's Immunization Agenda 2030, which aims to extend immunization benefits across all age groups.

## Protecting Vulnerable Populations

Dr. Laila Al Jasmi from MoHAP confirmed that the RSV vaccine is part of the UAE's National Immunisation Programme. Pregnant women are advised to receive the vaccine to pass protective antibodies to their newborns. For older adults, the same vaccine is recommended to safeguard against severe illness.
