Daily tea linked to stronger hip bones in older women, heavy coffee intake tied to slight bone loss, study finds

## Tea and Bone Health

A recent study from Flinders University has found that daily tea consumption may contribute to stronger hip bones in older women. The research, which observed nearly 10,000 women over the age of 65 for a decade, indicates that those who regularly drank tea had slightly higher hip bone density compared to non-tea drinkers. The study suggests that catechins, plant compounds found in tea, might play a role in enhancing bone formation and reducing bone breakdown.

## Coffee's Impact on Bone Density

The study also examined the effects of coffee on bone health. It found that moderate coffee consumption, defined as two to three cups a day, did not significantly affect bone density. However, consuming more than five cups daily was associated with a slight decrease in bone density. Researchers believe caffeine may interfere with calcium absorption and bone metabolism, though the effects were minor.

## Recommendations

Despite these findings, researchers caution against making drastic changes to coffee or tea habits. The observed effects, while statistically significant, were modest at the individual level. The study emphasizes that calcium and vitamin D remain crucial for bone health, but suggests that beverage choices could be a small factor to consider, especially for older women seeking to maintain bone strength.
