## An Unlikely Journey

Sana Arif, a 41-year-old athlete, has made an incredible journey from learning to swim in 2021 to representing Pakistan in the triathlon at the Asian Games in Japan. Her story stands out among the Pakistani contingent due to her rapid progress in the sport.

## Overcoming Barriers

Originally from Kuwait and raised in Lahore, Sana returned to Kuwait in 2007. Despite her interest in sports, swimming was a challenge she only tackled in 2021. Just two years later, she completed her first Ironman 70.3 in Turkey, a demanding event that includes a 1.9km swim, 90km bike ride, and 21.1km run. Since then, she has participated in three such events.

## Training in Extreme Conditions

Training in Kuwait posed its own challenges, with temperatures often exceeding 50°C. Sana adapted by starting her training sessions as early as 4am to cope with the heat.

## Asian Games Opportunity

In 2026, Sana was invited to trials for Pakistan's triathlon team for the Asian Games. Despite facing competitors who excelled individually in swimming, cycling, and running, her ability to combine all three disciplines earned her a spot on the team. She joins Anisha, Mohid Sadiq Lone, and Muhammad Mustaghis Noor in representing Pakistan.

## Competing on the Asian Stage

The women's individual triathlon event at the Asian Games, set for September 20 in Gamagori City, includes a 750m swim, 20km bike ride, and 5km run. Sana acknowledges the tough competition but is proud to represent Pakistan just five years after learning to swim. Her journey is a testament to her determination and resilience.
