The Watch Gérald Genta got wrong - and fifty years later, he's been proven right

## A Misunderstood Masterpiece

In 1976, Gérald Genta designed the Ingenieur SL, Reference 1832, for IWC. At the time, the watch was a commercial failure, with only 598 units produced between 1976 and 1983. It was a bold design, featuring a steel sports watch with an integrated bracelet, but it failed to capture the market's attention.

## Rediscovery and Revival

Decades later, collectors began to appreciate the Ingenieur SL's unique design, transforming it into one of IWC's most coveted models. To celebrate its 50th anniversary, IWC released two limited editions of the Ingenieur Automatic, each with a production cap of 1,150 pieces. These new models maintain the original's design elements, such as the bezel with five screws and the integrated bracelet.

## Honoring the Legacy

The anniversary editions feature a brushed, silver-plated dial, a nod to a rare variant of the original. The iconic lightning bolt symbol, representing the watch's anti-magnetic properties, has been replaced with the number 50 to mark the milestone. Alexia Genta, co-founder of the Gérald Genta Heritage Association, emphasized the enduring inspiration of her father's work, while IWC's Creative Director, Christian Knoop, highlighted the lasting impact of the Ingenieur SL on both Genta's career and IWC's history.
