Your iPhone has a new scam protection feature — but it's turned off by default

## Impersonation Risk Detection

Apple has introduced a new security feature for iPhones and iPads called Impersonation Risk Detection, available with iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. This feature aims to identify potential impersonation scams where criminals pose as trusted entities like banks or government agencies.

## How It Works

The system evaluates signals on the device to assess the risk level of actions such as payments or account changes. It categorizes risks as unknown, medium, or high. This information is then shared with compatible third-party apps, which can decide how to respond, such as by issuing warnings or requiring additional verification.

## Activation Required

The feature is not enabled by default. Users need to activate it by navigating to Settings, then Privacy & Security, and selecting Impersonation Risk Detection. They may also need to log into the App Store with their Apple Account.

## Privacy Considerations

Apple assures users that the analysis occurs on the device and does not involve sending personal data to Apple. The system does not access the contents of Photos, Messages, or Mail, and only shares risk assessments with apps, not the underlying data.

## Growing Security Challenges

This feature addresses the increasing trend of scams targeting the user rather than the device's security. It highlights the importance of verifying not just the identity of the person performing an action, but also ensuring they are not being manipulated.
