EGA tests Al Taweelah upgrade that could add 67,000 tonnes of output a year

## EGA's Al Taweelah Upgrade

Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) is piloting a new technology at its Al Taweelah smelter in Dubai, aiming to increase aluminium production by 67,000 tonnes annually. This initiative involves the installation of E40 technology on 13 DX reduction cells, with plans to potentially expand it across all 808 cells in potlines 1 and 2.

## Energy Efficiency and Environmental Impact

The E40 technology is designed to enhance production while reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions by approximately 6% per tonne of aluminium produced. This aligns with EGA's commitment to improving efficiency and minimizing environmental impact.

## Restoration and Future Plans

The upgrade is being accelerated during the restoration of Al Taweelah, following significant damage and an emergency shutdown earlier this year. EGA's CEO, Abdulnasser Bin Kalban, emphasized the company's dedication to continuous improvement and overcoming challenges.

## Historical Context and Future Projects

EGA has a history of developing and implementing its own smelting technologies, with significant past investments like the $300 million retrofit at Jebel Ali in 2017. The company is also testing its latest EX smelting technology at Al Taweelah, preparing it for future projects, including a new smelter in Oklahoma, USA.
