The heat’s easing, the UV isn’t: How much sun protection do you need in the UAE now?

## Understanding UV Exposure

As temperatures in the UAE drop in November, many assume the need for sun protection decreases. However, dermatologists emphasize that ultraviolet (UV) radiation remains a concern year-round. Dr. Dina Magdy Noor from RAK Hospital highlights that UV exposure should be based on actual time spent outdoors and individual skin sensitivity, not just the temperature.

## UVA and UVB Rays

The sun emits UVA and UVB rays, both contributing to skin damage. UVB rays, responsible for sunburn, fluctuate with the seasons, while UVA rays, known for causing skin aging, remain relatively constant. Dr. Rahaf Ali Madanieh from Medcare Medical Centre advises against viewing these rays as separate threats, as both are important for skin cancer prevention.

## Indoor Exposure

For those spending time indoors, it's important to note that UVA rays can penetrate window glass, potentially leading to skin damage over time. Dr. Noor suggests that people sitting near windows or commuting regularly may still experience significant UVA exposure.

## Cloudy Days and Sun Protection

Even on overcast days, UV rays can penetrate clouds, making sun protection necessary. Dr. Madanieh warns that cooler temperatures can create a false sense of security, but UV exposure remains a risk, especially around midday.

## Choosing the Right Sunscreen

The SPF number on sunscreen bottles primarily indicates UVB protection. Dr. Noor recommends using a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher for extended outdoor activities. For those mostly indoors, reapplication every two hours may not be necessary unless near windows or with specific skin concerns.

## Sunscreen Formulations

Both mineral and chemical sunscreens offer effective protection if properly formulated. Mineral sunscreens are often preferred for sensitive skin, while chemical ones are lighter. Tinted sunscreens with iron oxides can help prevent hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.
