UAE annual leave rules explained: When can you carry days forward?

## Annual Leave Entitlements in the UAE

Employees in the UAE are entitled to a minimum of 30 days of paid annual leave each year, provided they have completed at least six months of service with their employer. For those who have worked between six months and a year, the entitlement is two days per month.

## Carrying Forward Unused Leave

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation allows employees to carry forward unused leave to the next year, but this requires employer approval. The carried-over leave is compensated based on the employee's basic salary. Employers cannot prevent employees from taking their leave for more than two consecutive years unless the employee opts to carry it forward or receive a cash allowance instead.

## Leave Calculation and Payment

If an employee leaves the company before using their accrued leave, they are entitled to payment for the unused days. This payment is also based on the basic salary. Part-time employees receive annual leave proportional to their working hours as outlined in their contracts.

## Leave Scheduling and Public Holidays

Employers can set leave dates according to operational needs, but must notify employees at least a month in advance. Public holidays occurring during annual leave are counted as part of the leave period unless otherwise stated in the employment contract or company policy.
