## New Legal Measures in the UAE
The United Arab Emirates has introduced stringent penalties for spreading false information online. This move aims to combat the growing issue of misinformation, particularly during crises when it can cause public confusion and disrupt social stability.
## Legal Framework
Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 is central to these efforts, targeting the dissemination of false news on digital platforms. Legal consultant Ihab Al Najjar highlighted that this law criminalizes the publication or sharing of misleading information that could harm public interest.
## Penalties for Offenders
The law imposes severe consequences for those involved in spreading false information. Offenders may face up to one year in prison and fines starting at Dh100,000. During crises, penalties increase to two years imprisonment and fines of at least Dh200,000.
## Complementary Legislation
Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021 complements the cybercrime law by addressing defamation and the spread of inaccurate information online. Lawyer Mohammed Al Awami Al Mansouri noted that these laws provide additional protection against the misuse of digital platforms.
## Balancing Expression and Protection
The integration of these laws aims to regulate information flow while balancing freedom of expression with societal protection. Legal experts emphasize the importance of continuously updating these regulations to ensure accurate communication, especially during emergencies.
