IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers resigns with immediate effect

## Sudden Resignation

Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo Airlines, has resigned effective immediately, citing personal reasons. His departure comes after a challenging period for the airline, marked by significant operational disruptions.

## Interim Leadership

Rahul Bhatia, IndiGo's Managing Director and co-founder, will temporarily oversee operations until a new CEO is appointed. Elbers requested that his notice period be waived in his resignation letter.

## Tenure Highlights

Elbers, who became CEO in September 2022, led IndiGo through a phase of growth, including surpassing $10 billion in revenue and expanding the fleet to over 440 aircraft. The airline also placed a historic order for 500 Airbus A320-family planes.

## Operational Crisis

In December 2025, IndiGo faced its largest operational crisis due to difficulties in implementing new pilot fatigue regulations. This led to over 2,500 flight cancellations and nearly 1,900 delays, affecting more than 300,000 passengers. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) fined the airline ₹22.20 crore and issued show-cause notices to Elbers.

## Impact on Reputation

The crisis tarnished IndiGo's reputation for punctuality and attracted scrutiny from both regulators and the public. Despite initial resistance to calls for his resignation, Elbers ultimately decided to step down.
