Air India raises surcharges: Passengers urged to check fares before booking

## New Surcharge Details

Air India has announced a phased increase in fuel surcharges on both domestic and international flights, starting March 12, 2026. This decision comes in response to rising aviation turbine fuel (ATF) costs, which account for nearly 40% of airline expenses. The increase is attributed to geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region and high Excise Duty and VAT in major Indian cities.

## Phased Implementation

The surcharge will be implemented in phases. Phase 1 begins on March 12, affecting new bookings only. Domestic flights within India and those to SAARC countries will see a surcharge of INR 399. Flights to West Asia and the Middle East will incur a USD 10 surcharge, while Southeast Asia flights will see an increase from USD 40 to USD 60. Flights to Africa will have a surcharge of USD 90.

Phase 2, starting March 18, will affect flights to Europe, North America, and Australia, with surcharges increasing to USD 125, USD 200, and USD 200 respectively. Details for Phase 3, covering the Far East, will be announced later.

## Passenger Advisory

Passengers are advised to check fare details before booking, as the new surcharges apply only to bookings made after the effective dates. Changes to existing bookings may attract the new surcharge. Air India emphasizes that these surcharges are essential to cover rising costs and prevent flight cancellations. The airline plans to review and adjust surcharges as necessary.
