‘Brain-dead’ India woman starts breathing after ambulance hits pothole

## Unexpected Revival

A 50-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh, India, experienced a remarkable recovery after being declared brain-dead. Vineeta Shukla was being transported home in an ambulance after doctors in Bareilly found no brainstem reflexes and deemed her chances of survival minimal. Her family had already started funeral preparations.

## The Incident

On February 24, while traveling on the Bareilly-Haridwar National Highway, the ambulance hit a pothole, causing a sudden jolt. This unexpected impact appeared to revive Vineeta, as she began breathing normally again. Her husband, Kuldeep, immediately halted the funeral plans and rushed her to Neurocity Hospital in Pilibhit for emergency care.

## Medical Assessment and Recovery

At Neurocity Hospital, Dr. Rakesh Singh, a neurosurgeon, reviewed Vineeta's condition and previous diagnosis. Initial assessments from Bareilly indicated severe neurological damage, with absent brainstem reflexes and a Glasgow Coma Scale score of three, suggesting complete unresponsiveness. However, further tests revealed heavy neurotoxins in her system, which were addressed during her treatment.

## Current Condition

Following intensive medical care, Vineeta gradually regained consciousness and returned home, now able to speak with her family. Her husband described her recovery as "conquering death." Vineeta, who works as a senior assistant in the judicial courts, had initially fainted on February 22, leading to her hospitalization and subsequent discharge when her condition worsened.
