Right to refuse sailing: What seafarers need to know

## High-Risk Areas Declared

The Philippines has affirmed the right of its seafarers to refuse assignments in high-risk maritime zones. This comes after a Filipino crew member went missing following an attack near the Strait of Hormuz. The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has designated the Arabian Gulf, Strait of Hormuz, and Gulf of Oman as "Warlike Operations Areas."

## Advisory and Compensation

Under the DMW Advisory No. 11, Filipino seafarers can decline deployment to these areas without penalties. Shipowners are required to enhance security measures, and compensation for families of seafarers is doubled in cases of death or disability.

## Ongoing Monitoring and Support

Authorities are currently tracking approximately 6,400 Filipino seafarers in the region, ensuring their safety. The DMW, along with other agencies, is providing support to the family of the missing crew member, while search and rescue operations continue.
