## New Feature for Young Users WhatsApp is introducing a new feature allowing children under 13 to use the app with parental oversight. This initiative aims to provide a secure messaging environment for younger users while giving parents control over key settings.
## How It Works The parent-managed account is a simplified version of WhatsApp. Children can send and receive messages and calls, but all privacy settings are controlled by the parent. The child's account is linked to the parent's, ensuring that any message requests from unknown contacts require parental approval.
## Features and Restrictions Children can only message saved contacts by default. They cannot use Meta AI integration, share locations, update statuses, or join groups without parental consent. End-to-end encryption remains intact, ensuring message privacy.
## Setting Up the Account To set up, both the parent's and child's devices need to be present. The process involves downloading WhatsApp on the child's phone, verifying their age, and linking it to the parent's account using a QR code. A six-digit PIN, known only to the parent, secures the account settings.
## Meta's Motivation This move is part of Meta's broader strategy to enhance online safety for children. The company has been implementing similar controls across its platforms, responding to global concerns about children's online safety. This feature allows parents to monitor their child's WhatsApp usage without intruding on their privacy.
