From investment banker to farmer: Why Dubai founder says UAE needs vertical farming now

## From Finance to Farming

Roman Ulyanov, once an investment banker, now leads Greeneration, a vertical farming company in the UAE. His transition from finance to agriculture was driven by the need to address the country's heavy reliance on imported food.

## The Greeneration Model

Located between Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Greeneration operates a climate-controlled facility that supplies over 350 restaurants and hotels with a variety of produce, including microgreens and edible flowers. The company has seen significant growth since its inception.

## Innovative Farming Techniques

Greeneration uses advanced methods, such as growing plants in rockwool instead of soil and using nutrient-rich water. This approach allows them to cultivate over 55 plant varieties, including specialty leaves and microgreens.

## Addressing Supply Chain Challenges

The ongoing regional conflict has increased import costs, prompting Greeneration to adapt by reducing order minimums and extending payment terms. The company aims to support local food production as a viable alternative to imports.

## Future Plans

Ulyanov plans to expand Greeneration's offerings to include premium mushrooms and functional foods. While he acknowledges that complete food self-sufficiency in the UAE is unlikely, he emphasizes the importance of boosting local production to ensure food security.
