## New Digital Border System
The European Union has introduced a new digital border control system, known as the Entry/Exit System (EES), which has resulted in the denial of entry to over 27,000 travelers. This system, which became fully operational recently, aims to enhance travel efficiency and security by replacing traditional passport stamps with digital registrations.
## Security Concerns
Since its initial rollout in October, the EES has flagged nearly 700 individuals as potential security threats. The system is designed to monitor who enters and exits the EU, providing authorities with real-time data to manage security risks and address issues like overstays more effectively.
## Implementation and Coverage
The EES is currently in use across 29 countries, including all EU member states except Ireland and Cyprus, as well as non-EU Schengen area members like Norway, Iceland, Switzerland, and Liechtenstein. Travelers from outside the EU are required to provide their passport details, fingerprints, and photographs at automated kiosks, with the process taking approximately 70 seconds on average.
## Concerns and Feedback
While the system aims to streamline border crossings, there have been concerns about potential delays at airports and train stations. The European Commission is actively engaging with member states to ensure smooth implementation and address any issues that arise.
