Instagram expands teen safety features in MENA, including UAE

## New Safety Measures Instagram, owned by Meta, is rolling out enhanced safety features for teenagers across the Middle East and North Africa, including the UAE. This initiative aims to provide a safer online environment for young users amid increasing global concerns about child safety on social media.

## Enhanced Content Controls The platform will automatically place users under 18 into a revised 13+ content setting, limiting exposure to sensitive material. Teens cannot opt out of these protections without parental consent. The update includes stricter content filtering to ensure age-appropriate content by default.

## Parental Controls A new "Limited Content" setting allows parents to enforce stricter controls, reducing the content teens can access. This setting also restricts teens from interacting with accounts that share inappropriate content.

## Technology Upgrades Instagram has improved its technology to proactively detect and filter inappropriate content across various features like feeds and direct messages. Updated AI tools ensure responses are suitable for users aged 13 and above.

## Regional Rollout The updated settings are being gradually introduced across the MENA region and are expected to be fully implemented in the coming months. Instagram acknowledges that while no system is perfect, it is committed to continuous improvement to enhance online safety for teens.
