UAE introduces microgrids across federal buildings, supports 2031 vision

## Nationwide Microgrid Initiative

The UAE's Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure has launched a strategic project to install microgrid systems in federal government buildings. This initiative aims to strengthen energy security and support the "We the UAE 2031" vision by creating a smart and adaptable energy ecosystem.

## First Nationwide Implementation

This project, the first of its kind in the UAE, was initially developed at the Ministry's headquarters in Sharjah in 2025. It focuses on enhancing national readiness for power outages during emergencies by integrating clean energy generation, storage, and management.

## Improved Energy Management

Engineer Sharif Al Olama, Undersecretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs, highlighted the shift from traditional centralized grids to smart, decentralized systems. This change improves electricity supply reliability, reduces costs and emissions, and increases resource efficiency. During its pilot phase, the project reduced energy consumption by 362,000 kWh annually, saved Dh110,000 per year, and cut carbon emissions by 76 tonnes.

## Future Expansion Plans

The Ministry plans to expand this model across the UAE, developing a national framework for microgrid implementation. This will involve collaboration with public and private sectors to ensure unified efforts and integration. The project is part of a broader vision to reshape the country's energy landscape using renewable energy and advanced technologies, enhancing infrastructure efficiency and reducing carbon footprints.
