## Hezbollah's Stance
Hezbollah, the Iran-backed militia in Lebanon, has firmly rejected the US-brokered ceasefire discussions between Israel and Lebanon. The group insists it will not accept any agreements resulting from these talks.
## US Position
The United States has emphasized that any ceasefire must be negotiated directly between the governments of Israel and Lebanon, not through armed groups. This stance follows "productive discussions" hosted by Washington, which aimed to facilitate direct negotiations between the two nations.
## Historical Context
These talks represent the highest-level engagement between Israel and Lebanon since 1993. Both countries have agreed to commence direct negotiations at a mutually agreed time and place, despite ongoing border clashes that have displaced civilians and increased regional tensions.
## Challenges to Peace
The central issue remains Hezbollah's role. The US and Israel argue that the group must be disarmed or sidelined for a lasting peace. This builds on a fragile framework established in November 2024, when a US proposal led to a temporary cessation of hostilities.
## Hezbollah's Rejection
Hezbollah has dismissed the talks as "futile," claiming they are a tactic to pressure the group into disarming. A senior Hezbollah official, Wafiq Safa, has urged Lebanon's government to withdraw from the negotiations, framing them as a move against the militia rather than a genuine effort for peace.
