Europe unveils emergency energy plan after Middle East crisis adds €24bn to import bill

## EU Faces Rising Energy Costs

The European Union has unveiled an emergency energy strategy in response to a €24 billion increase in energy import costs, attributed to the ongoing Middle East conflict. This plan aims to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and address the financial impact on the EU.

## Key Measures in the Plan

The European Commission's strategy includes immediate consumer support, such as income assistance, energy vouchers, and reduced electricity taxes for vulnerable households. Additionally, a new State Aid Temporary Framework will allow governments to support industries heavily affected by high energy costs.

## Long-term Structural Reforms

The plan also emphasizes long-term reforms, including the establishment of a Fuel Observatory to monitor fuel supply and demand across Europe. The Commission plans to introduce an Electrification Action Plan by summer, setting targets for increased use of renewable energy sources.

## Investment and Coordination

To finance the transition, the EU acknowledges the need for €660 billion annually until 2030, beyond public funding capabilities. A Clean Energy Investment Summit will be organized to attract private investment. The Commission also aims to optimize transport fuel distribution and support the aviation sector amid current disruptions.
