Under-fire Nepal minister quits after weeks in office

## Minister's Resignation

Sudan Gurung, Nepal's Home Minister, has resigned after less than a month in office. His decision came amid increasing scrutiny over his financial dealings and pressure for a corruption investigation. Gurung, who took office on March 27, announced his resignation on social media, emphasizing the importance of public trust and accountability.

## Political Background

Gurung was a prominent figure in last September's Gen-Z protests, which led to the fall of Nepal's previous government. These protests, initially sparked by a social media ban, escalated due to broader issues of corruption and economic dissatisfaction. The demonstrations resulted in 76 deaths and over 2,500 injuries.

## Political Career

In January, Gurung joined the Rastriya Swatantra Party and secured a parliamentary seat after the party's significant victory in the March elections. Shortly after assuming his ministerial role, he made headlines by arresting former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli and ex-Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak for their alleged roles in the September crackdown.

## Allegations and Investigation

Gurung faced allegations concerning his financial investments and connections to a businessman under investigation for money laundering. The opposition Nepali Congress expressed concerns about the impartiality of any investigation if Gurung remained in office. Despite dismissing the allegations as rumors, Gurung decided to step down to allow for an "independent and impartial" probe.

## Government Response

Prime Minister Balendra Shah will temporarily oversee the home ministry until a new appointment is made. The government has also established a commission to investigate the assets of politicians and officials as part of a broader anti-corruption agenda. Nepal ranks 109th on Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index.
