## Crescent Moon Sighting in UAE
The official start of Ramadan 2026 in the UAE will be determined by the traditional crescent moon sighting. Astronomical forecasts suggest the holy month may begin on February 18 or 19, but the exact date will depend on local observations. The UAE Council for Fatwa has encouraged residents to participate in the moon sighting on February 17.
## Global Announcements
Several countries have already announced the start of Ramadan. Oman, France, Turkey, Singapore, and Australia have declared February 19 as the first day of fasting. These decisions are based on astronomical calculations indicating that the crescent moon will not be visible on February 17.
## Weather and Astronomical Conditions
In Saudi Arabia, weather conditions ahead of the crescent sighting include partly cloudy skies in the western regions. A solar eclipse on February 17 is expected to have no impact on the moon sighting in the Arabian Peninsula, as the moon will set before the sun.
## Moon Sighting Challenges
The International Astronomical Centre has noted that the crescent moon is unlikely to be visible in most Arab and Islamic countries on February 17. In cities like Abu Dhabi and Riyadh, the moon is predicted to set before sunset, making sighting difficult. Only in Honolulu might the crescent be visible, but only with a telescope.
## Ramadan Duration
Ramadan can last 29 or 30 days, depending on the sighting of the crescent moon marking the month's end. For 2026, forecasts suggest a 29-day Ramadan, pending official confirmation.
