## Introduction
The U.S. government's new "gold card" visa, introduced by former President Donald Trump, has seen limited success since its launch. The program, which requires a minimum investment of $1 million, has only been granted to one individual so far.
## Program Details
Launched in December, the "gold card" visa aims to replace the EB-5 program, which offered U.S. visas for investments in businesses with at least 10 employees. The new visa allows foreigners to live and work in the U.S. and is intended to attract skilled talent and generate revenue.
## Financial Aspects
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick reported that despite initial claims of $1.3 billion in sales, only one visa has been approved. Each application incurs a $15,000 fee, and corporations can pay $2 million for a foreign employee's visa, with an additional 1% annual fee.
## Future Prospects
While hundreds of applications are pending, Lutnick expressed satisfaction with the program's progress, emphasizing the importance of thorough vetting. The initiative also includes a proposed $5 million "Trump Platinum Card," offering extended stays without U.S. income tax.
## Global Context
The concept of "golden visas" is not unique to the U.S., with similar programs available in countries like the UK, Spain, and Canada. These programs aim to attract wealthy individuals by offering residency in exchange for significant investments.
