## Breakthrough in Gene Therapy
A recent study has demonstrated significant improvements in hearing and speech recognition for patients with inherited deafness following gene therapy. The research focused on correcting mutations in the OTOF gene, which is one of the many genetic causes of deafness from birth.
## Study Details
The study involved 42 participants aged between nine months and 32 years, all carrying the OTOF mutation. Conducted by researchers from Mass Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, and Fudan University, the trial took place at eight centers across China.
## Results
The findings revealed that 90% of the participants experienced improved hearing, with half reaching normal hearing levels by the end of the 2.5-year study. Younger patients, particularly those under 18, showed the most significant gains in both hearing and speech recognition.
## Global Impact
According to the World Health Organisation, approximately 430 million people globally suffer from hearing loss requiring rehabilitation, including 34 million children. Genetic factors account for 60% of deafness in newborns, with the OTOF mutation responsible for 2% to 8% of these cases. This therapy offers a promising solution for those affected by this specific genetic condition.
