## Swearing-In Ceremony
Tarique Rahman has officially taken office as Bangladesh's Prime Minister following a swearing-in ceremony at the National Parliament building in Dhaka on February 17, 2026. This marks the beginning of the first elected government since the 2024 uprising.
## Challenges Ahead
Rahman, aged 60, faces significant challenges, including improving national security, addressing economic issues, and healing political divisions. Bangladesh, known as the world's second-largest garment exporter, has been under an interim government for 18 months after the previous regime was overthrown.
## Political Background
Rahman, leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), returned to the country in December after 17 years in exile. He is the son of former president Ziaur Rahman and part of a prominent political family. His party secured a landslide victory in the February 12 elections, winning 212 seats.
## Opposition and Reactions
The Jamaat-e-Islami party, which increased its parliamentary presence, has contested results in several constituencies but pledged to be a peaceful opposition. Meanwhile, the Awami League, led by Sheikh Hasina, was barred from participating in the elections. Hasina, currently in hiding, criticized the election process.
## Future Prospects
Rahman has committed to restoring stability and fostering economic growth. Observers note that economic success could pave the way for addressing other national challenges. The election results have been met with relative calm, and India has expressed support for the BNP's victory.
