How these conjoined twins were separated in Saudi Arabia during one of the world’s most complex surgeries

## Complex Surgery in Riyadh

In a remarkable medical feat, Filipino conjoined twins Klea Ann and Maurice Ann Misa were successfully separated in Saudi Arabia. The operation, which took place at King Abdullah Specialised Children’s Hospital in Riyadh, lasted 18 and a half hours and involved a team of 30 medical professionals. This challenging procedure was part of the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme.

## High-Risk Procedure

The twins were joined at the head, presenting one of the most complex cases globally due to shared cerebral venous sinuses and intertwined brain tissue. Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Rabeeah, head of the medical team, noted the significant risks involved, including potential severe neurological complications.

## Five-Stage Surgical Plan

The twins arrived in Saudi Arabia in May of the previous year for thorough evaluations. The surgical team, led by Dr. Muatasim Al-Zoubi, developed a detailed five-stage plan. Specialists from various fields, including neurosurgery and plastic surgery, collaborated to ensure the operation's success.

## Programme Milestone

This operation marks the 70th successful separation under the Saudi Conjoined Twins Programme, which has addressed 157 cases from 28 countries since 1990. It is the third case involving Filipino twins.

## Family's Relief

The twins' mother expressed immense gratitude and relief following the surgery, describing it as a miracle for their family. She thanked the medical team for their dedication and for giving her daughters the chance to live separate lives.
