## Unique Observation by Hope Probe
The UAE's Hope Probe has achieved a significant milestone by capturing images of the interstellar comet 3I/ATLAS. This comet, only the third of its kind detected in our solar system, was observed as it passed close to the sun, a moment Earth-based telescopes missed due to its position behind the sun.
## Comet 3I/ATLAS: A Rare Visitor
Discovered in July 2025, 3I/ATLAS is notable for its origin outside our solar system. It travels at speeds up to 153,000 miles per hour and offers a unique opportunity to study the chemical makeup of distant star systems. Unlike local comets, its composition provides insights into the building blocks of other planetary systems.
## Strategic Decision by UAE Space Agency
The UAE Space Agency strategically decided to use the Hope Probe, initially designed to study Mars, to observe the comet. This decision was made after the global Mars science community anticipated the comet's approach near Mars. The probe's instruments captured the comet in visible and ultraviolet wavelengths, providing data unavailable from Earth.
## Significant Findings
The Hope Probe detected hydrogen, oxygen, and notably, carbon monoxide, as the comet disintegrated near the sun. This observation is unique due to the probe's position and the capabilities of its instruments. The data collected is expected to contribute significantly to understanding other solar systems.
## Implications for Space Exploration
The findings from 3I/ATLAS offer a rare glimpse into the chemistry of an alien star system. The UAE's decision to extend the Emirates Mars Mission until 2028 highlights its commitment to contributing valuable data to the global scientific community. Full scientific analyses are anticipated in the coming months, promising further insights into the nature of interstellar objects.
