6.1 quake on Hokkaido island latest to shake Japan

## Early Morning Quake

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake shook Japan's northern island of Hokkaido early on Monday, April 27, 2026. The quake occurred shortly before 5:30 am local time in the southern region of the island, at a depth of approximately 80 kilometers.

## No Tsunami Warning

Despite the strength of the earthquake, no tsunami warning was issued. The US Geological Survey indicated that the risk of significant damage or threat to life was low due to the sparse population in the affected area, located about 200 kilometers east of Sapporo.

## Increased Risk of Landslides

The Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) cautioned that areas experiencing strong shaking might face an increased risk of landslides and falling rocks.

## Recent Seismic Activity

This earthquake follows a series of recent seismic events in Japan, including a 5.0 magnitude quake in the sea south of Hokkaido just hours earlier. Less than a week ago, a 7.7 magnitude quake off northern Iwate prefecture injured six people and triggered tsunami waves.

## Japan's Seismic Landscape

Japan is situated on the Pacific "Ring of Fire," making it one of the most seismically active regions globally. The country experiences around 1,500 earthquakes annually, accounting for about 18% of the world's seismic activity. The JMA has warned of an increased likelihood of a megaquake, 8.0 magnitude or stronger, following recent tremors.
