Clark Airport’s makeover: Second runway set to ramp up capacity in Central Luzon aviation hub

## New Developments at Clark International Airport

Clark International Airport, located approximately 80 kilometers north of Manila, is set to enhance its capacity with the addition of a second runway. This development is part of a broader strategy to transform the airport into a major logistics and aviation hub in Central Luzon.

## Contract Awarded for Runway Design

On April 27, 2026, the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) awarded a ₱206.9-million contract for the detailed engineering design of the new runway. The contract was given to a joint venture between Schema Konsult Inc. from the Philippines and South Korea's Yooshin Engineering Corp.

## Strategic Importance

The new runway is a key component of the Department of Transportation's infrastructure strategy under the Marcos administration. It aims to modernize transport networks and enhance the Luzon Economic Corridor. The second runway will provide operational redundancy, ensuring continuous airport operations during maintenance or disruptions.

## Economic Impact

BCDA President Joshua M. Bingcang highlighted that the expansion will boost regional economic activity and create jobs. The airport's role as a strategic alternative to the congested Ninoy Aquino International Airport is reinforced by rising passenger and cargo traffic.

## Future Prospects

Construction of the runway is expected to begin after the design phase concludes in mid-2027, with operations anticipated by late 2029. The expansion aligns with efforts to reduce reliance on Manila's primary airport and strengthen the Philippines' position in the global aviation market.
