Dubai school reopening rules: New ‘safe zone’ requirements, explained

## School Reopening Timeline

Schools in the UAE resumed in-person classes on April 20 after over a month of remote learning due to regional tensions. In Dubai, private schools needed approval from the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) to reopen. They were required to complete specific training and sign a reopening consent form. By April 27, all schools were expected to offer both in-person and distance learning.

## Introduction of 'Safe Zones'

To enhance safety, schools have established 'safe zones' on campus. These are designated indoor areas designed to protect students during emergencies. According to KHDA guidelines, these zones must be enclosed with solid walls and a concrete roof, have proper ventilation, and be free from external exposure. Emergency exits and assembly points must be clearly marked.

## Safe Zone Compliance

For a safe zone to be compliant, it must be away from windows and glass, accessible within one minute from any location, and not require crossing outdoor areas. Schools must have multiple safe zones throughout the building, and they should be clearly marked on evacuation maps. Staff must be trained on safety protocols and evacuation routes.

## Resumption of Outdoor Activities

With the reopening, most Dubai schools are also resuming outdoor activities. Previously, outdoor areas like sports fields were closed, and physical education classes were paused. However, recent updates from KHDA indicate that these activities can now continue, allowing schools to move closer to normal operations.
