Europe faces jet fuel shortage as Middle East supplies halt

## Jet Fuel Supply Disruption

Europe is grappling with a significant jet fuel shortage as shipments from the Middle East have completely stopped this month. This disruption is due to ongoing regional conflicts and the closure of crucial shipping routes, coinciding with the aviation industry's preparations for the busy summer travel season.

## Impact on European Imports

Historically, Europe has heavily depended on the Middle East for jet fuel, with the region supplying about 60% of Europe's external imports last year. However, for the first time since 2017, European imports from the Middle East are expected to vanish entirely in April. This leaves a substantial gap, as European refineries produce only 1.1 million barrels per day, against a demand of 1.6 million barrels.

## Rising Prices and Potential Shortages

The halt in supply has led to a surge in jet fuel prices, now exceeding $200 per barrel. Although airlines and suppliers have minimized the immediate threat of a crisis, the International Energy Agency has warned that Europe could face actual shortages by June if it does not secure alternative supplies to replace more than half of its usual imports from the Middle East.
