Europe faces jet fuel shortage as Middle East supplies halt

## Supply Disruption Threatens Summer Travel

Europe is grappling with a significant jet fuel shortage as shipments from the Middle East have come to a complete halt. This disruption is particularly concerning as the aviation sector gears up for the busy summer travel period.

## Impact of Middle East Conflict

The cessation of fuel shipments is attributed to ongoing conflicts and the closure of crucial shipping routes in the Middle East. This marks the first time since 2017 that Europe will receive no jet fuel imports from the region in April.

## Dependency on Middle Eastern Imports

Historically, Europe has depended heavily on the Middle East for jet fuel, with the region supplying about 60% of Europe's external imports last year. European OECD countries consume around 1.6 million barrels of jet fuel daily, but local production only covers 1.1 million barrels, creating a deficit that imports must fill.

## Rising Fuel Prices

As a result of the supply disruption, jet fuel prices have surged past $200 per barrel. Despite reassurances from airlines and suppliers, the International Energy Agency has warned that Europe could face actual shortages by June if alternative supplies are not secured.
