Ecuador plans more mega-prisons for gang members: minister

## New Mega-Prisons Planned

Ecuador is set to construct additional mega-prisons to address escalating gang violence linked to drug trafficking. This initiative is part of President Daniel Noboa's stringent anti-gang strategy, as announced by Interior Minister John Reimberg.

## Current and Future Facilities

The first mega-prison, modeled after El Salvador's Terrorism Confinement Center, opened in November and accommodates 800 inmates. A second facility, with a capacity for 15,000 individuals, is scheduled to begin construction in May and is expected to be completed within 18 months. Reimberg hinted at the possibility of a third prison if necessary.

## Addressing Security Concerns

Reimberg emphasized the importance of these prisons in containing "highly dangerous criminals" who require isolation. Despite criticism from human rights groups, he insists that ensuring national security is paramount.

## Rising Violence

Ecuador is currently experiencing a surge in violence, with a homicide rate of 51 per 100,000 people, making it the most violent country in the region. The government attributes this to power struggles among gangs connected to international cartels.
