Why viral hepatitis remains a major global health challenge

## WHO's 2026 Global Hepatitis Report

The World Health Organization (WHO) has released its 2026 Global Hepatitis Report, emphasizing that viral hepatitis remains a significant global health issue. Despite existing prevention and treatment methods, the organization urges countries to intensify efforts to curb the spread of hepatitis B and C, which can lead to severe liver disease or death if untreated.

## Current Statistics and Challenges

The report reveals that in 2024, approximately 1.34 million people died from hepatitis B and C, with 1.8 million new infections occurring annually. This translates to over 4,900 new infections daily. Although there has been progress, such as a 32% reduction in new hepatitis B infections since 2015, the current pace is insufficient to meet the 2030 elimination targets.

## Barriers to Treatment

A significant barrier to eliminating hepatitis is the lack of access to treatment. An estimated 287 million people lived with chronic hepatitis B or C in 2024, yet only a small fraction received care. Stigma, weak health systems, and unequal access to healthcare contribute to this gap.

## Path to Elimination

WHO maintains that eliminating hepatitis is achievable with existing tools. The hepatitis B vaccine is highly effective, and short-course therapies for hepatitis C can cure most cases. The challenge lies in ensuring these treatments are accessible to those in need.
