India hits milestone: Renewable energy generation — 5 years ahead of 2030 Paris Agreement target

## India Surpasses Paris Climate Target

India has reached a significant milestone in its renewable energy journey, achieving over 50% of its electricity capacity from non-fossil sources as of April 2026. This accomplishment comes five years ahead of the 2030 target set by the Paris Agreement. The country's total non-fossil capacity now stands at approximately 283 GW, including renewable energy and nuclear power, out of a total capacity exceeding 520 GW.

## Solar and Wind Power Surge

Solar energy has been a major contributor to this growth, with installed capacity increasing to 150.26 GW, a dramatic rise from just 2.82 GW in 2014. Wind power also plays a significant role, contributing 56.09 GW. In the fiscal year 2025-26 alone, India added a record 55.3 GW of non-fossil capacity.

## AI and Data Centres Drive Demand

The expansion of AI data centres in India is fueling demand for renewable energy. These centres, which require substantial power, are leading to increased investments in energy infrastructure. Major companies like Google and Reliance are contributing to this growth.

## Global Comparison

Globally, China leads with approximately 2,258 GW of renewable capacity, followed by the United States with around 468 GW. The European Union has also seen significant growth in solar and wind energy. India ranks third globally in renewable capacity, showcasing impressive growth relative to its development stage.

## Future Challenges and Opportunities

India faces challenges such as grid integration and balancing renewable energy with baseload needs. However, continued policy support and private investment are expected to help India add over 300 GW of renewables by 2030. This progress could accelerate India's path to becoming a developed economy by 2047 while contributing to global climate goals.
