## Initiative Overview
The United Arab Emirates has introduced a National Register of Modern Architectural Heritage to document and protect significant buildings that represent the nation's modern history. This initiative was announced by the Ministry of Culture and Youth during the inaugural meeting of the National Identity Committee, led by Sheikha Mariam bint Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
## Purpose and Strategy
The register is part of the National Identity Strategy, developed with the Presidential Court, aiming to preserve important sites and strengthen Emirati identity. It aligns with the National Policy for the Preservation of Modern Architectural Heritage, focusing on structures developed post-1960s. These include public buildings, cultural spaces, and urban landmarks that have contributed to the UAE's development.
## Key Landmarks
In its initial phase, the register includes ten buildings across the UAE, such as Dubai's Union House, where the UAE Union Agreement was signed in 1971, Sheikh Rashid Tower, and Deira Clocktower. In Abu Dhabi, the Qasr Al Hosn complex and the Cultural Foundation are featured. The selection criteria were based on historical significance, architectural value, and impact on urban development.
## Protection and Benefits
Buildings listed in the register will receive official recognition and enhanced protection, along with access to support programs. These sites will also benefit from research, documentation, and promotional opportunities, raising awareness of the UAE's architectural heritage and supporting cultural tourism.
## Role of the National Identity Committee
The National Identity Committee, comprising senior officials like Sheikh Salem bin Khalid Al Qassimi and Abdullah bin Touq Al Marri, will oversee initiatives to strengthen national identity and coordinate efforts across sectors. The committee will guide policies and ensure collaboration among entities involved in cultural and national identity projects.
