## Biogas as an Alternative
Amid an energy crisis linked to the Iran conflict, many rural Indian households are turning to biogas from cow dung as a reliable alternative to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). This shift is helping alleviate the pressure on LPG supplies, which have been affected by supply delays and increased demand.
## Rural Adoption
In villages like Nekpur in Uttar Pradesh, residents such as Gauri Devi are using biogas for cooking. The process involves mixing cow dung with water and storing it in underground tanks to produce methane. This method not only provides a consistent energy source but also generates nutrient-rich slurry for use as fertilizer.
## Government Support
India has been promoting biogas since the 1980s, subsidizing millions of biogas units. The government aims to increase biogas usage to reduce carbon emissions, with plans for biogas to make up a growing percentage of liquid gas used domestically and in vehicles.
## Challenges and Benefits
Despite its benefits, biogas adoption faces challenges such as installation costs and space requirements. However, the environmental and economic advantages, including reduced reliance on imported LPG and improved agricultural productivity, are driving interest. Farmers like Pramod Singh highlight the dual benefits of gas production and enhanced fertilizer quality.
## Future Prospects
While biogas currently represents a small portion of household energy use, its potential is significant. The Indian Biogas Association emphasizes the need for organized community efforts to manage biogas plants effectively. As interest grows, particularly in light of LPG shortages, biogas could play a larger role in India's energy landscape.
