## Introduction to "Costume Art"
The 2026 Met Gala will unveil "Costume Art," a groundbreaking fashion exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute. This exhibit aims to highlight body types often overlooked in art history, showcasing a diverse range of forms through fashion.
## Reclaiming Body Types
Curator Andrew Bolton emphasizes the exhibit's focus on reclaiming various body types, such as the corpulent, disabled, pregnant, and aging bodies. The display includes mannequins modeled after real people with diverse physiques, challenging traditional beauty standards.
## Highlights of the Exhibit
The "Pregnant Body" section features designs like Georgina Godley's "pregnancy dress," celebrating the expectant form. The "Corpulent Body" section includes Michaela Stark's corsetry, which accentuates rather than conceals larger bodies.
The "Disabled Body" section showcases mannequins based on individuals like Paralympian Aimee Mullins and activist Sinéad Burke, highlighting physical, sensory, and cognitive disabilities. Notable pieces include Alexander McQueen's prosthetic boots and a Burberry trench coat adapted for Burke.
## Exploring Commonalities
Beyond diversity, the exhibit also explores universal themes like aging and mortality. A section dedicated to blood features Vivienne Westwood's "Martyr to Love" jacket, paired with Albrecht Dürer's artwork.
## Exhibit Details
"Costume Art" opens to the public on May 10, 2026, and will be on display until January 10, 2027, offering visitors a chance to engage with fashion as a form of art that embraces all body types.
