## Protest Against GoldQuest's Mining Project
Hundreds of residents in the Dominican Republic gathered on Sunday to oppose a proposed mining project by Canadian company GoldQuest. The project, known as the Romero project, aims to extract gold, copper, and silver from a reserve estimated at 1.1 million ounces, valued at approximately $5 billion.
## Environmental Concerns
The mining site is planned for the Central Cordillera region, near San Juan, an area reliant on agriculture. Protesters, carrying Dominican flags, marched to Sabaneta, where the main dam provides water to over 30,000 hectares of farmland and generates hydroelectric power. They voiced concerns that mining could contaminate the water supply, chanting "Water yes, gold no!"
## Local Opposition
Residents like Juana Ramon and Manuel Encarnacion expressed fears that the project would harm their water resources and force them to leave their homes. Encarnacion stated he would rather die than see the area exploited.
## Previous Mining Issues
The protestors referenced past issues with another Canadian mining company, Barrick Gold, in Cotui, which led to family relocations and allegations of environmental damage. Local farmer Leuri Camarena highlighted the importance of agriculture, saying, "If we exploit that mine, what's going to grow here?"
