Dubai's RTA launches GCC Traffic Week 2026 campaign to boost pedestrian safety

## Focus on Pedestrian Safety

Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has initiated a safety campaign during GCC Traffic Week 2026, aimed at reducing pedestrian accidents. The campaign, titled "I Cross Safely," runs from May 3 to 8 and involves collaboration with various UAE entities to promote safe road-crossing practices.

## Decline in Road Fatalities

The initiative follows a notable decrease in road fatalities in Dubai, which dropped from 21.7 deaths per 100,000 people in 2007 to 1.4 by the end of 2025. This improvement is attributed to enhanced infrastructure and stricter enforcement measures.

## Infrastructure and Enforcement

Ahmed Al Khzaimy, Director of Traffic at the RTA, highlighted the role of infrastructure upgrades and enforcement in improving safety. Dubai now boasts 177 pedestrian bridges and over 2,000 traffic-calming measures. The RTA's strategy is supported by private partners like the Emirates Driving Institute.

## High-Visibility Outreach

The campaign targets high-risk groups through workshops and distribution of safety materials. Reflective caps and instructional booklets with QR codes are provided to public transport users. The booklets link to videos warning against crossing from undesignated areas.

## Community Engagement

The RTA is also engaging the community by organizing hospital visits for motorists to meet traffic accident victims. Schools are implementing the "Golden Rules for Generational Safety" program to instill safety habits in students. Al Khzaimy emphasized the importance of shared responsibility among all road users to ensure safety.
