India: Top Hyderabad woman cop goes undercover — is harassed within minutes

## Undercover Operation Reveals Harassment

B. Sumathi, Hyderabad's first female police commissioner, recently conducted an undercover operation to assess women's safety on city streets at night. Disguised in plain clothes, she stood alone at a bus stop in Dilsukhnagar after midnight on May 2. Within minutes, she was approached by several men, some of whom made inappropriate remarks or attempted to engage her in conversation.

## Immediate Police Action

Nearby police teams, monitoring the situation, detained over 40 men, many of whom were accused of harassing women. The operation aimed to highlight the dangers women face and to send a strong message against such behavior.

## Safety Concerns in Hostel Areas

The exercise also shed light on the lack of security in areas with a high concentration of hostels. Many hostels lacked basic safety measures like CCTV cameras. In response, Sumathi organized meetings with local stakeholders to discuss improving safety and monitoring anti-social activities.

## Sumathi's Background and Focus

Sumathi, a 2006-batch IPS officer, has a history of conducting similar operations. Previously, she worked in intelligence, playing a significant role in persuading Maoists to surrender. Now, her focus is on ensuring urban safety, particularly for women in Hyderabad.
