Fujairah signs coral reef deal to protect marine ecosystems

## Fujairah's New Environmental Initiative

The Fujairah Environment Authority has entered into a partnership with Holcim Emirates Cement Company to enhance marine ecosystem protection. This collaboration was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding signed during the "Make it in the Emirates" exhibition in Abu Dhabi.

## Focus on Artificial Coral Reefs

The agreement aims to design and deploy artificial coral reefs using natural and repurposed materials. These structures are intended to restore marine habitats and support the UAE's environmental strategies, including the National Food Security Strategy 2051 and the National Biodiversity Strategy 2031.

## Supporting Marine Biodiversity

The initiative is part of a broader coral reef rehabilitation project led by the Fujairah Environment Authority and the Fujairah Research Centre. It seeks to enhance fish stocks, protect sea turtles, and promote sustainable ecotourism.

## Research and Innovation

The partnership will also involve joint research programs to evaluate the environmental impact of the reef structures. Sustainable materials sourced locally will be used, and workshops will be organized to share knowledge on marine conservation.

## Oversight and Goals

A joint committee will oversee the implementation of the agreement, ensuring alignment with strategic environmental goals. The collaboration reflects Fujairah's commitment to natural resource protection and marine habitat restoration.

## Leadership Statements

Aseela Abdulla Moalla, Director of the Fujairah Environment Authority, emphasized the importance of this initiative for natural resource conservation. Ali Said, CEO of Holcim UAE and Oman, highlighted the use of low-carbon solutions and advanced technology to support the UAE's Net Zero 2050 objectives.
