Archer inches closer to flying air taxis in Abu Dhabi with new UAE certification

## UAE Certification Boosts Archer's Air Taxi Ambitions

Archer Aviation, a California-based company, has moved closer to launching its electric air taxi services in Abu Dhabi. The UAE's General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) has granted Archer's Midnight aircraft a Restricted Type Certificate (RTC), allowing for limited operations before full commercial certification is achieved. This marks a significant step for Archer as it aims to introduce electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in the region.

## Understanding the Restricted Type Certificate

The RTC is part of a regulatory framework that permits initial operations under controlled conditions. Unlike a full Type Certificate, which confirms comprehensive compliance with safety and operational standards, the RTC allows for specific, limited use while further certification work continues. Archer's Midnight aircraft will operate in partnership with Abu Dhabi Aviation, its local partner.

## Progress in the U.S. and UAE

While Archer is advancing in the UAE, it is still undergoing the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) certification process. The FAA has accepted Archer's "Means of Compliance," a crucial step in verifying the aircraft's safety. However, full FAA Type Certification, necessary for unrestricted operations in the U.S., has not yet been granted.

## UAE's Regulatory Framework

The UAE is developing its own certification and operational guidelines for air taxis, drawing from the FAA's frameworks but tailoring them to local needs. Archer's timeline for launching in the UAE is not solely dependent on U.S. certification, as it has already secured several operational approvals from the FAA.

## Collaborative Efforts

Archer and UAE authorities are working on various aspects required for the commercial launch, including aircraft certification, flight operations, and pilot training. Inspections and flight demonstrations have been conducted by UAE officials at Archer's U.S. facilities. Mahmood Al Hameli, CEO of Abu Dhabi Aviation, expressed confidence in the UAE's readiness to adopt innovative aviation solutions.
