US sets record energy production driven by natural gas, oil, renewables

## Record Energy Output

In 2025, the United States reached a new peak in energy production, hitting 107 quadrillion British thermal units (BTUs). This marked a 3.4% increase from the previous year, continuing a four-year trend of record-setting energy output.

## Natural Gas and Oil Lead Growth

Natural gas production soared to 39 trillion cubic feet, driven by significant output in regions like Appalachia and Permian. The US maintained its position as the world's largest natural gas producer since 2011. Crude oil production also reached new heights, with 13.6 million barrels per day, primarily from the Permian region.

## Rise in NGPLs and Renewables

Natural gas plant liquids (NGPLs) production increased by 7%, reaching 4 trillion cubic feet. Renewable energy sources, including solar and wind, continued to grow, setting new records for the fifth consecutive year. However, biofuels saw a slight decline.

## Coal's Role

Coal production rebounded, rising by 4% to 533 million short tonnes, accounting for 10% of the nation's energy output. This increase followed two years of declining coal production.
