CBSE mandates three languages for Classes 9 and 10 from July 1: What students need to know

## New Language Requirements

Starting from the 2026-27 academic year, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) will require students in Classes 9 and 10 to study three languages. This change aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and aims to enhance multilingual education.

## Language Structure

Under the new policy, students must choose three languages, labeled R1, R2, and R3. At least two of these languages must be Indian. The second language (R2) must differ from the first (R1), and the third (R3) must be distinct from both.

## Assessment Changes

The third language will not have a board exam in Class 10, but internal assessments will be mandatory. Students must pass this subject to receive certification, and their performance will be noted on their final certificates.

## Special Provisions

Exemptions will be available for Children with Special Needs and students returning from abroad. Schools will initially use Class 6-level textbooks for the third language, supplemented by additional materials like poems and regional literature.

## Teacher Support

To address potential teacher shortages, CBSE will allow flexible staffing solutions, including shared teaching resources and hiring retired educators. Detailed guidelines for teaching will be provided by mid-June 2026.
